Cognitive Insight, Clinical Insight, and Reasoning in Schizophrenia : A Pilot Study in a Forensic Setting
2016
This pilot study of 20 chronically ill male inpatients with schizophrenia and a history of violence investigates the relationships between cognitive insight, clinical insight, reasoning, and symptoms in a forensic setting. The majority (75%) of the patients with schizophrenia made hasty decisions based on a small amount of information (the jumping-to-conclusion bias, JTC). In addition, the data suggested that the more information patients gather, the more clinical insight they have and the less distressed they are by their symptoms. However, neither cognitive nor clinical insight were found to be statistically significantly associated with symptoms. The Beck Cognitive Insight Scale (BCIS) s…
Resting-state posterior alpha rhythms are abnormal in subjective memory complaint seniors with preclinical Alzheimer's neuropathology and high educat…
2020
International audience; Cognitive reserve is present in Alzheimer's disease (AD) seniors with high education attainment making them clinically resilient to extended brain neuropathology and neurodegeneration. Here, we tested whether subjective memory complaint (SMC) seniors with AD neuropathology and high education attainment of the prospective INSIGHT-preAD cohort (Paris) may present abnormal eyesclosed resting state posterior electroencephalographic rhythms around individual alpha frequency peak, typically altered in AD patients. The SMC participants negative to amyloid PET AD markers (SMCneg) with high (over low-moderate) education level showed higher posterior alpha 2 power density (pos…
Microcephaly/Trigonocephaly, Intellectual Disability, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Atypical Dysmorphic Features in a Boy with Xp22.31 Duplication
2019
The Xp22.31 segment of the short arm of the human X chromosome is a region of high instability with frequent rearrangement. The duplication of this region has been found in healthy people as well as in individuals with varying degrees of neurological impairment. The incidence has been reported in a range of 0.4-0.44% of the patients with neurological impairment. Moreover, there is evidence that Xp22.31 duplication may cause a common phenotype including developmental delay, intellectual disability, feeding difficulty, autistic spectrum disorders, hypotonia, seizures, and talipes. We report on a patient with microcephaly and trigonocephaly, moderate intellectual disability, speech and languag…
Quality of Life in Dementia: Impact of Cognition and Insight on Applicability of the SF-36
2011
Comparability of measures of quality of life in dementia and in other diagnostic groups, such as mild cognitive impairment, normal aging, or other diseases, is highly desirable. However, the impact of cognitive deficits and impaired insight on applicability and validity of generic instruments is sparsely studied.Sixty patients with dementia [38 women; age: mean (SD) = 78.7 (6.4) years; Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE): mean (SD) = 20.2 (6.0)] recruited as part of the start-modem study, a multicenter care research study in Germany, completed the generic instrument SF-36 and the specific instrument Quality of Life-Alzheimer's Disease (QOL-AD).QOL-AD self-rating scores [mean (SD) = 32.8 (5…
Cognition, metacognition and the patient perspective : new ways to evaluate and rehabilitate schizophrenia patients in forensic psychiatric care
2016
This research focused on factors associated with schizophrenia as well as on the feasibility and effectiveness of group metacognitive training (MCT) in schizophrenia patients with a history of violence in a high-security forensic hospital setting. One of the aims was to scrutinize reasoning ability in regards to jumping to conclusions (JTC) cognitive bias and the expression of cognitive insight (insight into one’s own thinking), a metacognitive ability. A second aim was to examine the associations of these factors with each other and with insight into illness and delusions. Moreover, the patients’ health-related quality of life (HRQOL) was explored. A further objective was to study the pote…
Health literacy and its association with health outcomes among students in upper secondary education
2022
Abstract Background Health literacy (HL) - as a broad range of health-related competencies and skills- has been recognized as a determinant of health outcomes, and suggested to be a modifiable health resource and a factor contributing to empowerment and equity. Thus, there is a need to identify the state of HL in various population groups. The aim of this study was to investigate HL levels and associations between HL, physical activity and subjective health among students in general upper secondary and vocational Swedish-language schools in Finland. Methods The study used cross-sectional data from the Finnish LIITU-study among students in Swedish-speaking general upper secondary and vocatio…
From Agile Software Development to Mercury Business
2014
The rapid downfall of the Nokia software ecosystem has radically altered the landscape of software industry in Finland in recent years. There has been a shift from largely corporate driven way of working, which is often dominant in large companies, to more agile practices, and in general software organizations are seeking new, leaner ways of composing, delivering, and using software also inside already established companies. To accelerate this transformation in large scale, a collaborative research program has been created, called Need for Speed (N4S). In this paper, we give an insight to the joint goals and concrete actions of the program and discuss the motivations of individual companies…
